Snip, snip for a safety hair cut

My hair has been getting longer and longer, a common enough lament from most of us during the last six months while we \”shelter in place.\” It finally reached the point where I could tie my hair back into a ponytail which felt better. I\’d cut my bangs myself and while I thought they didn\’t look too bad they didn\’t look great either.

The turning point came yesterday when I was sitting on the couch reading my book and Jon was sitting across from me on the loveseat. I asked him a question about something and he replied (totally off topic) that anytime I wanted to go get a haircut he would take me.

How\’s that for feedback? Ha. Ha. Actually I had been telling him for days that I needed to go get a haircut so this wasn\’t too off the subject just not what I was talking about at the time.

Of course I immediately thought I MUST look much worse than I thought. Nice. Growl. I decided though after a few minutes that I should take him up on his offer. I called up my regular place to get a haircut to see how long it would take to get an appointment.

The lady said, \”Are you free now?\”
I said, \”Yep!\”

So I went back into the living room and told Jon, \”Okay, I can get a haircut right now, can you take me?\”

Yes he could and in less than five minutes I was at the beauty shop.

First Covid Haircut

My haircut experience felt very safe. I wore my mask the whole time and the hairdresser wore her face mask plus plastic shield over her face as well. Luckily Jon and I had both received free face masks from Humana in the mail the day before that had elastic fasteners over the ears and I decided to wear that one instead of my home sewed version with strings that tied on the back of my head.

When I entered the shop I had to sign a piece of paper saying that I had no Covid symptoms and that I had washed my hands for 20 seconds before the appointment. I didn\’t know about the washing hands part but they had a sanitizer available and I used that.

The hairdresser took my temperature and I had to write that temp down on the paper.

There was only one other patron in the shop (in the past it has always been full) and I was shown to a cutting chair and I took the seat. I had planned on getting a very short haircut so I didn\’t have to come back too soon and in front of me on the wall was a big picture of a lady wearing a short, short, short haircut. A rather manish version I would say. I pointed to the picture. \”I\’ll take that one with just a bit more hair over the ears.\”

I didn\’t get a shampoo, the hairdresser just used a spray bottle to get my hair wet and that worked fine. Towards the end of the haircut I was asked to hold the mask with my hand over my mouth and take the elastic bands down so she could cut around my ears. As soon as she had done that I put the elastic bands back on. From start to finish there was no point during the whole experience that I did not have a mask over my face.

I had been a bit nervous about getting a haircut with this Covid stuff getting scarier by the minute but it went very well. I felt very protected and safe with the whole procedure.
