The front cover of an old 1908 cookbookI seem to have zero energy but I have started a tiny new project.

When I first came to Vancouver I found an old 1908 cookbook that was put together by the ladies guild of St. Luke’s Church.

It cost a lot of money (according to me) in that it was $65 dollars but I thought at the time how fun it would be to get it reprinted.

So it’s been about 15 years and of course I haven’t worked on it but now that I am not working at the Fort Bookstore I decided to work on it.

My plan is to do just the first chapter, which is Soup. It will end up being about 16 pages and maybe I can offer it for sale on my book table when I am at events for a few dollars.

Maybe noone will think it as cool as I do but regardless it is a fun project to keep busy with and I don’t knit.

This is the first recipe. I like that you have to put it in a kettle over the fire . . .

Tomato Bouillon

Put one quart tomatoes with one-half quart water in a kettle over the fire.

Add one tablespoon chopped onion, two bay leaves, four whole cloves, enough pepper to taste, and one level teaspoon of celery seed.

Cook twenty minutes, then strain through a sieve.

Beat the whites of two eggs until partially light, then add to the tomato and boil rapidly for five minutes.

Season with salt and serve with croutons.
