Love what you are doing

Now here is a funny thing about me. I like to do the vacuuming. I don\’t want to do it all day of course, but 30 minutes of vacuuming is a great time for me to unwind while I sing praise songs and let all the ideas that are racing through my head just flow in and out.

My joy relationship with the vacuum started in the Monastery. A lot of the work that I was doing required sitting at the computer and doing brain work or praying in the chapel with focused readings and meditation. Vacuuming was the one time I could just let go and have a private little prayer session with myself and no one hardly ever bothered me. It was total free time!

I often would start my vacuum session with a definite prayer request I was praying for. Sometimes for my own projects but often as not some special request that had come in and I wanted to connect with God about. Not sure if success was measured doing the cleaning that way but it did make me happier to do a chore that before I found burdensome.

Now the success of my 30 minute vacuum chore is that I have clean floors and work in some meditation time. I bet a lot of you do the same kind of thing? What\’s your favorite chore you\’ve turned into \”me\” time?

Some friends I remember shared that they did that doing the dishes. That doesn\’t work for me as Jon and I always do that together so for private praise time for me it\’s definitely the vacuum.

Other Love What I\’m doing stuff

So here is a random list of other things I love to do.

  1. Write blog posts
  2. Create the Jigsaw puzzles
  3. Brainstorm stuff projects I\’m working on
  4. Listen to motivational podcasts and videos that teach me something
  5. Create web pages
  6. Work on new puzzle books
  7. Garden (in very tiny doses).
  8. Cook a new recipe or bake cookies!
  9. Eat – is that work? Of course not but I love eating.
  10. Read – read – read
  11. Play solitaire (I\’m getting silly here)
  12. Watch movies
  13. Take walks with Jon
  14. Go on a car ride (even small ones are fun for me)
  15. Talk on the phone with family and friends

You should make a random list of things you love to do. Not sure why, just because it\’s kind of fun. It also puts your life into a joy mood. Seeing all things that make you happy has to be good for the soul.

Don\’t suppose this is the kind of success Albert Schweitzer was thinking of when he said that about happiness – but truly it is often little daily things that can make us successful in how we live our life.

One Response

  1. My quiet prayer time was always my drive back and forth to work. Since I am now retired and very old, I seldom drive any more, I have to search other ways to get quiet time–but really have found nothing that works consistently. Never tried it with doing the dishes–but since I do them alone, maybe that will work. I’ll give it a try! Thanks for bringing this topic up, Patty.
