“In ordinary life, we hardly realize that we receive a great deal more than we give, and that it is only with gratitude that life becomes rich.”

Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Ordinary Life

Today I feel like I am a bowl of fifteen ingredients in a mixing bowl just waiting for the beaters to whip me into something that makes sense. I\’m in the waiting stage with the salt, flour, sugar, baking powder and who added pepper? Every few minutes something new plops into the bowl and I wonder what in the heck is going to happen with that?

Or maybe today is like the beginning of doing a gigantic jigsaw puzzle. Open the box, spill out all the pieces and wonder, \”I really don\’t have the patience to work with all these tiny, multi-colored pieces today!\” Can\’t I just shake the box up and all the pieces go together?

Funny that is not what I really want to have done with doing a puzzle and I guess I should apply a little of that \”it\’s all part of play\” that I should apply to life today.

More Than We Give

Filling the day with gratitude is being aware of this, \”We receive a great deal more than we give.\”

Today has been one of those days when I let myself panic about all the stuff to do. I felt like a huge dump truck had unloaded its full load of \”Things you should of done yesterday\” and as a result I wanted to scream and have a two year old tantrum fit right inside my sixty-three year old self. Not helpful.

I finally decided I needed to stop guilt tripping myself and focus on doing one or two things and let all the million others fall away. Sort of like a plant that needs some rain drops to thrive but not the whole, darn lake.

Last night I had this thought about . . .

What If . . .?

What if the people who I might think have really arrived with fortune, popularity, and a wonderful life style in actually don\’t have even a tenth of the real riches that I have?

If I had to make a trade for all the things I love about my life today for some of their rich, popular stuff would I really want to make the trade?

And if that is the case and it is . . . why am I trying to grab onto stuff and a lifestyle I don\’t really want?

I need to lighten up already. Enjoy playing the puzzle. Enjoy sitting in that crazy mixing bowl with all the ingredients (who dropped that egg in here?) and allow God and life to do the rest.

Scripture quote for the day

He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.
Ecclesiastes 3:11

Please add \”your\” three gratitude moments in the comments. It\’s a great way to pick up your day and it\’s fun for the rest of us to read!

  1. Writing these posts on gratitude is helping me. It\’s like giving myself a daily pep talk. Which I need.
  2. Let go and love God. My new adaption to \”Let Go and Let God.\” I likes it.
  3. Today I am going to expect a miracle. Maybe two or three.

  1. Sometimes I wonder if God expects us to multitask. Jesus frequently went off by Himself…I think that was His equivalent of mental health time. I try to do that…when things pile up I take a few minutes, light a candle and just sit by my self. I am amazed how God seems to lift the problems and make them manageable.
Today I am grateful for your daily thoughts.

    1. I have an oil candle that I use like that. Only my wick is too short and I haven’t been able to find a replacement without ordering online. 🙁
And yes, God and time does seem to help most problems!

  2. Another great post. Thank you !
    Gratitude for
A wonderful day at baby shower for one of my grand daughter’s.
    Peaceful and fun day.
Watching the World Series, Go Nationals !

    1. Uh-oh. Looks like the Nationals lost. Least that is what I think I saw on the news. I didn’t watch any sports yesterday – been playing around on the computer too much.

How lovely to have granddaughters with new babies. That is a blessing.
      Have a wonderful day too!
