I haven\’t lived in Vancouver very long. Not quite a year. In May of this year (2016) I went with friends to sit on the sidewalk of 63rd street in Hazel Dell to watch the annual parade. It was quite fun. The parade was small like the kind you might see in any small town. I enjoyed the local, community spirit. Kids and goats and horses and lots of firetrucks. Of course there were a few more professional floats but for the most part it was just jump in and join the parade.
I took pictures and a bit of video. Afterwards I wondered what to do with it all. I like blogging and so I decided it would be fun to create a blog about life in Vancouver, Washington and share things about living here.
Below are some of the photos I took of the parade. It is held every year on the third Sunday in May. You can find out more from the Facebook page for The Parade of Bands.

Sometimes bigger and better is not what life is all about. Sometimes its enjoying what is at hand. That\’s what I like about living in Vancouver. The pace is a bit slower but there is still plenty to do and see.
AND if I do want bigger and better it\’s easy to jump in the car and head over the bridge to Portland, Oregon which is only twelve miles away.

  1. I’ve been wondering for the last while what you were up to these days , how you were enjoying your new job , etc , etc . I love to hear about things you talk about . You make everything sound sooooo interesting ! We have a parade here in August ; they call it the Gold Cup Parade . It is a very big parade ; it takes an hour and a half to pass by – it is the largest parade east of Montreal , Quebec . The next evening they hold the Gold Cup and Saucer Race . It’s a very big event . People bring their horses from all over North America to enter them in the race , which is sulky driven . Charlottetown is considered the Kentucky of Canada , so they say . There are less than 150,000 people on our whole Island ; so , this is really quite an honour . But , in the summer , our population grows big time ; PEI is totally surrounded by water , fairly warm water , with wonderful beaches ; and there are many wonderful golf courses and restaurants here . We have one of Canada’s top culinary institutes here in Charlottetown .Tourism , agriculture and fishing are the chief vocations ; otherwise , stores’ staff , government employees { both federal and provincial } and working with people whose business requires assistance with fishing , agriculture and tourism . So , many people work at seasonal work ,meaning they draw {un}employment insurance during the winter, unless they find something to tide them over , which pays . I’m glad you’re back !!!

    1. Wow Joanne that sounds like a wonderful parade! Your area sounds like a beautiful place to live – and with a culinary institute must have a good supply of great chefs.
I just put Charlottetown in Google and took a quick look at images there. Beautiful! Can see why it would be a great tourist attraction.
I went to a sulky race once with my sister when she was living in Saratoga Springs, NY where they have those kind of races as well. Was fun.
Thanks for your note! My plan is to be much more consistent with this site. That’s my plan. But of course . . .

  2. A good thing to do is also tap into social media via Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram etc. Not sure if you have explored it all but there is so much out there and many ways to get more exposure for websites. Best wishes.

  3. Nice idea. Always fun to learn about different places.
I really enjoyed “My Dog Can Fly” and hope you continue to include your pet stories, at least from time to time somehow work them or one of them in. Maybe have them or one of them give a dog or cat account of interesting pet friendly places in Vancouver or interesting/unusual happenings on your walks . . . or just an occasional dog or cats eye view of life there worked into a story.
But I’m just a “dog crazy” old lady who enjoys all animals. I got both my dogs while doing volunteer work at a local humane society. I’m not sure if that’s the audience you want to attract or if that audience would be big enough. Just my thoughts. Anyway, what I really wanted to say is I do hope to see continued Buddy, Pudge and Andre updates from time to time! I’d also enjoy some spiritual thoughts, philosophy and prayers too.
It’s is interesting following you . . . I don’t even know how long but I think at least 10 years already!
