Scrambling
Some days it sure feels like I am stuck on an everlasting Merry Go Round. Up and down on shiny, circus horses. Having fun, enjoying the ride but not getting anywhere.
Maybe that is okay. I don’t know. I sat outside on my yard swing this morning, with my cup of hot water and looked out at the clouds floating overhead. A robin was hopping over the lawn with a bit of worm in his mouth and ears cocked to find another. Very busy bird.
So my advice to me for the day is ” Make the best of everything.”
So far I’m not doing a good mental trip with that. Definitely I need to work to keep positive – be happy for what is – concentrate on all the wonderful, great things in my life and keep out of the ditches on the side of the road.
When I was a kid a few times I went with my two older brothers and my sister Barb and we walked along a country highway picking up bottles. It was about seven miles to a small country store and that was our final destination. Seven miles is a long trip for a third and fourth grader (my younger sister and me) but what added to the walk is that we were constantly going up and down from the road to grab bottles flung in the ditches.
We would fill up a bag of bottles and stash them along the road at some point. When we finally made it to the store we would get a pop and wait for our Dad to drive home from work and pick us up for the return ride home. Once we had to go both ways and that trip was way too long. All I remember from that trip on the way back was being hot and tired and wishing the ditches were full of cool, Orange Crush pop.
At any rate we did make a few dollars and that was big money for us. And you know maybe life is like that. Yes, we would go a lot faster if we just stayed on the road and didn’t run back and forth into ditches – but then we wouldn’t have gathered any bottles.
And in a weird sort of convoluted thinking, maybe life consists of multiple side trips that bring in treasures that we would never get if we only stayed with our feet on the pavement.
Interesting thought.
